The Poisoning Episode
Found out something really interesting last night. If you ever want to be in the shoes of a patient with nerve IX and X palsy, munch on uncooked yam - or, in my case, half-cooked yam. Didn't realise the stalkish part still had sap in it, and following a tingling sensation (parasthesiae?) I could not swallow at all. It was extremely alarming. Loads of water didn't help. Perhaps it blocks ACh receptors? No idea. A search on Yahoo! revealed nothing but more alarming news that uncooked yam causes gastroenteritis and bloody diarrhoea in birds.
SO, by this strange twist in fate, I lay in bed waiting for the paralysis to go away (rather, I was praying I'd go away) when I dropped straight to sleep. So no writeup done. Sh*t.... imagine telling Dr. Tien, "I didn't do my writeup because I was paralysed by yam and subsequently sank into a coma." Half-intending to skip school to do it today, but this is bad. Cannot miss any more, the lectures are important. GIT today for lectures I think. Hmm .. Hepatitis? GE? Then again ... I may reconsider. =P
Darn those yams. And I was just starting to enjoy them.
Oh, no MAF celebration last night, parents were out dancing. So Ting, Maria and I had fun in the garden. Hung lanterns on my POOR POOR Nepenthes tendrils (nice improvisation eh?), lit candles all around the garden and got sparklers for those 2 baby girls to play with, haha. Maybe I'll post a pic soon. Brownie was alarmed by sparklers. Still have 4 boxes of mooncake in the kitchen, I dread the start of Mooncake Buffet Week. Somewhat like during X'mas - the dreadful Pillows of Ham Buffet Week.

I have the solution to your uncooked yam problem.
Taro contains calcium oxalate.
Blamed for this irritation are the needle-like crystals of calcium oxalate; these occur throughout the plant and become lodged in the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.
Heating is necessary to remove an acrid, irritating property of the raw yam.
You probably weren't affected on nerve 9 and 10. Now, that's a naughty excuse to come up with to skip your homework, isn't it?
But why the paralysis? It was real paralysis, I'm sure of it. Or is it that the crystals irritate the mucosa so much they become oedematous and no longer able to contract properly? Most interesting! Shall try the remedy of heat-removal next time. Drink boiling water! =D
