The Glasses

As continued from the grousing about my broken glasses ...

Yx managed to get my ass down to get a new pair made, and it was such a totally caustic experience. I went to a different branch, since my favourite optician wasn't working at the usual one anymore and this particular branch made a most marvellous impression the last time (involving a very sloppy person running out of contact lenses before the exams and the shop running out them too and an extraordinary manager who saved the day by presenting me with a free pair while I waited for stocks to arrive).

It was a total fiasco.

Maybe I'm just used to my optician having an impeccable taste and whipping out the most delicious frames for me all the time, but the young man at the counter was such a total nincompoop! The brand wasn't an issue, Tauruses always stick to what worked before. I was looking for a particular style of frame (stroke of inspiration from the cute guy in "In Her Shoes") and told him just that. He rummaged around the area and fished out some 20 pairs before I found something even halfway-decent.

First pair - THICK black-rimmed frame. I don't need to draw even more attention to my eyebags, thanks.
Second pair - LURID bright, poisonous blue frame. Yeah, if you want hospital mortality rates to go up from cardiac arrest.
Third pair - SQUARE frames. SQUARE. SQUARE I aged 50 years in an instant.

You get the idea. I whipped round to face yx and whispered rather loudly, "OMFG, he has ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WTF he's doing!!!" So anyway, I finally found what I *think* I wanted. Not the exact type, but close enough. And it's got this young, sophisticated and "smart but not nerdy" (according to yx) look to it.

SO. I asked him how much it'd be to make a pair of glasses, using these frames. He went ON AND ON AND ON about a 30% discount on these frames. Dude. I need lenses to go with the frames? Young man whips out a chart with a flourish and went ON AND ON AND ON about lens thickness. After a long ramble, he finally told me that Hey, we've got a promotion actually for a lens + frames set. DUH. Buzzing filling my head head, disbelief that anyone could be so daft, and definitely grouchy from being almost blind without glasses (a watch shop looks to me, without glasses, like a puddle of sparkling water at 2 metres away. Imagine that.) To finish up this mockery of a day, I just had to see another shop selling lovely Tag frames. Out of budget though.

Just out of curiousity, why isn't it assumed that if I want to buy a frame, I need lenses to go with them?

Collecting them next Sun, it's either going to be good, or a total disaster. You know how thick lenses can totally ruin a look. Just like how I can't wear rimless glasses. Fuck. In any case, no one's going to see me in them, except for utter vanity on occassion.
